Researching Alzheimer's using cells and mice

Dr Mark Dallas describes his research into the causes of Alzheimer's disease. His team focus on Glia (glial) cells found in the brain. In Alzheimer's disease Glia cells can damage healthy brain cells, contributing to the disease. Interrupting this process might offer a path to medical treatment. These cells have four main functions: (1) to surround neurons and hold them in place; (2) to supply nutrients and oxygen to neurons; (3) to insulate one neuron from another; (4) to destroy pathogens and remove dead neurons. They also play a role in neurotransmission and synaptic connections, including in the connections that form memory.
