Building a conversation about animal based research

Understanding Animal Research Oceania (UAR Oceania) is a new organisation that will enable public comminication for animal-based research across Oceania, while working closely and sharing resources with the UK-based organisation, Understanding Animal Research. Encompassing medical, agricultural, veterinary and environmental research and teaching, UAR Oceania supports the research sector and the public by providing resources and advice.

We help everyone understand why animals are used in scientific research, and support anyone with a biologically or medically based qualification to effectively communicate why animals are used in such research to others.

To do this, UAR Oceania works with its members and other stakeholders to develop effective, proactive communications that fit with or enhance their existing communications strategies. It ensures that researchers are actively supported to communicate with their local communities, and works with policy makers to help them monitor and listen to public concerns, balancing them with the needs of a growing research sector.

Our members receive:

  • Specialist advice to guide you
  • On-call communications support to assist
  • Strategic communications to help you prevent a crisis
  • Access to specialist training to develop your knowledge and skills
  • Events, networks, ideas and news to keep your staff connected

And members give:

Their support to building a conversation between the life-science community and the public about why the use of animals in research is vital to our society.

This area of communications is unique, and even professional communicators are often unsure about the correct approch to use. We also find that even experienced researchers and technicians do not know how to talk about their jobs without support. With your help, UAR Ocenaia will quickly establish a small team, working across the Australian and New Zealand time-zones, and actively supporting Oceania-based organisations. They will have the agility to react quickly and appropriately when needed, and will make sure that calls for insight, information or perspective are not left unanswered.

UAR Oceania will work with currently disparate groups, to build strong science communication networks to support the life-science community. Access to UAR’s existing knowledge and resources will allow a fast and smooth set-up while working relationships with Oceania’s policy and research sectors are established.
