In Elizabethan times smallpox killed more people than TB, leprosy, plague and syphilis combined. Even Queen Elizabeth 1st had smallpox just four years into her reign. But smallpox was known far earlier than Elizabethan times and the story told here starts with a pox-marked Pharaoh.
